Final Assembly Right Elevator: 5.0 hrs

April 18, 2020

Today was the final assembly of the right elevator and overall things went pretty smoothly. We remembered to put in the RTV on the trailing edge stiffeners before closing it up, this is a recommendation in Section 5 to help prevent cracking.

All the rivets were reachable with the pneumatic squeezer, which makes the process go pretty quickly. Unfortunately, because of how quickly we were working we overlooked the area where the elevator skin, counter weight skin, and spar are stacked up. We used the same length rivets (426AD3-3.5) that we were using all around the rest of the skin and predictably they were way to short. After drilling the 6 incorrect rivets out and putting in the correct length rivets, they set fine and looked good.

After the final rivets were set, we took the 4″ long 2×4 squeezer blocks and a clamp and set the final bit of bend into the trailing edge. It’s ~99% there, but I’m waiting to check it again after we bend the leading edges together to see if the final shape is affected at all.

Cheers,
