Rod End Install: 1.0 hrs

April 25, 2020

In order to mount the elevators and ailerons we had to install the rod ends into the horizontal and vertical stabilizers. There’s too much friction to install them by hand, so we had to make a special too. A quick trip to the hardware store for some 1/2″ PVC pipe and glue and we had everything we needed. After a few cuts and a little sanding and it looked like a rod end installation tool.

The rod ends went into the elevator easy enough, but the nut plates in the rudder were just off-set enough so that they wouldn’t go in. I took the dremel to the spar just lightly to open up the first hole by a few thousandths. After that I chased the threads with a tap and everything went together smoothly. I only chased the threads about a turn to clean up anything i may have touched with the dremel while avoiding taking out the mechanical locking feature in the plate nuts.
