Rudder Stop: 3.0 hrs

July 28, 2020

I attempted to get the internal rudder stop installed, but its never as easy as people claim. I want to mount it between the rudder mount flanges instead of on top or bottom. This means that you have to remove material in the middle of the “V” to fit around the rod end on the rudder. After that was done, I drilled the holes through the rudder mounts and started measuring deflection. I quickly realized the stop was hitting two rivets on the rudder instead of sitting flush up against the spar of the rudder. I clipped the rudder stop on the corners to clear the rivets and started grinding away to get the 1 3/8″ between the rudder and the elevators. I would grind and check, grind and check, etc. After about the 12th time of removing and installing the rudder I was finally getting close. Then I went from about 1 3/4″ to 1″ by removing a tiny amount of material. That stop was ruined. I ordered a new one, grabbed a beer and called it a day before messing anything else up.
