Flap Sensor, Brake Reservoir, Firewall Closeout: 9.0 hrs

September 3-4, 2020

Moved on from the wings since they’re almost done now and moved on to some of the fuselage / firewall work. I drill the hole for brake reservoir and mounted it. The bolts called out in the plans were too short and I had to order some longer ones. I also ordered a thing called a “Reservoir Dog” to go in-between the reservoir and its standard mesh cap. This should help keep the brake fluid in the reservoir while doing acrobatics.

After those were in place we moved on to the flap position sensor. We ordered some 4-40 stainless all thread and some plastic clevis joints online. These are designed for RC airplanes, but work well in this situation. There isn’t any major load on this, so the only thing we’ll have to keep an eye on is vibration fatigue over the life of the plane. Others seem to have good luck with this setup though. It took a little bit of trial and error to get the adel clamp located correctly, but overall this was a pretty simple install.

We then moved on to permanently install the firewall recess and the rudder pedal brace. Eventually I’ll come back and seal up all the tiny holes around the recess with some Firestop 2000, but for now just having it riveted in place will suffice.
